Has anyone experienced a problem with the HST set-up on these tractors? The HST oil filter seems to be in a vulnerable position and exposed to damage as does the HST fan. I had an unfortunate experience today (Sunday)where a piece of vine got tangled on the drive shaft and destroyed all but 2 of the fins on the HST fan. The fan appears to be made of nylon,which is normally quite strong but by the time I heard the noise the blades were gone!
Is anyone aware of an aftermarket protection shield or device to protect the filter and HST fan.

If it's any consolation you are not the first. I've not seen anything from the manufacturers of any of the subcompacts to cover this area and I think it might be hard to protect and yet still have the fan work properly. ....

Thanks Art. I've sent an e-mail to New Holland explaining what happened with a suggestion to find a remedy but haven't heard anything yet.
I've thought about getting a steel plate fabricated with attachment points located exactly like the MMM and use similar locking pins. This will protect the oil filter/HST fan and should provide enough ground clearance to work without worry of potential damage.
I kinda hope that New Holland will have a better solution - LOL. ....

Within 24 hours New Holland graciously replied to my suggestion about finding a solution to the vulnerability of the HST fan and oil filter on the TZ series. I'm not sure how this will benefit current owners but it may improve future models.
In the meantime, I've been waiting for my dealer to receive the required parts to replace the fan and it's been almost a week that the tractor is out of commission. I'd like to hear from other NH owners what their experience has been with getting replacement parts. Is a week or more unreasonable? ....

For CNH they offer one day air, unit down emergency at a cost. They also offer 3 day emergency, minor cost. When effective to use the weekly stock order is at no cost. ....

Help!!! It's been a week now since the parts were ordered and, according to the dealer, they're on the way. When I told the salesman about the problem with my HST fan he suggested not to run the tractor for more than 5 - 10 minutes. The parts guy said, based on the current tempuratures (around the freezing point), that I could probably run the tractor for about 45 minutes and then let it cool down before using it again - sounds logical. I'm losing valuable seat time as the days grow shorter and the ground gets harder. Any suggestions or advice? Should I use it or not? For sure, I don't want to invalidate the warranty. ....

For short bursts of use without high strains being put on the transmission I'd doubt that it would make much difference to the life. It would take about 30 minutes of use with a 5 minute warm up to get it up to temps to begin with. If doing low range digging it of coarse would raise the temps quicker but if it is only light work with no high stress on the drive train longer periods of work would acceptable. If you have access to a heat detector a temp of 200 degree's would be a time to stop working the transmission and allow it to cool. Most tractors transmission cases run 175 degree's to 190 when all systems are working properly. ....

Thanks Art. It's been a dismal weekend anyway with lots of rain and the shorter days (daylight) don't help much. If the parts don't arrive soon at least I'll be able to get a little "seat time" without damaging anything. As always, you're a wealth of information and inspiration! ....

Speaking about HST cooling fans, I had an interesting experience with the fan (or lack thereof) on the Airens S-16H I bought from my Grandma after my Grandpa died. He had purchased the tractor new in '78. When I was doing a little work on it, I noticed the fan was nowhere to be found, even though it was right there in the parts catalog. Looks like when Grandpa installed the rear PTO kit he forgot to reinstall the fan! 25 years of hard use later and the tractor is still going fine. No signs of hydrostatic problems at all. Wouldn't recommend this for your new TZ, though! And, yes, I did order a new fan. ....
